The health impact of Fukushima

Posted by ampontan on Thursday, April 7, 2011

Wolfgang Weiss, the chairman of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, was asked about the health effects of Fukushima. He answered:

“From what I know now, nothing.”

People with a perverse interest in reading the Comments section on articles such as these will enjoy the few that have already been posted. Here’s my favorite sentence:

Seriously?????

Because we all know that a sentence with five question marks has a much greater impact than a sentence with only one.

At least the writer was too upset about “swimming radiation” to add LOL.

LOL. But there are hundreds of reasons to doubt good job by current government and TEPCO. I attribute this to their outlook. LOL.

Seriously, I am checking radios daily, both air and water. Unless another blow or heavy rain occurs, the density would not rise. My family enjoyed hanami yesterday. I do it alone in the midnight hour when I walk back home from Kagurazaka, my usual night out area. Current Tokyo tap water tastes differently than before and it might be due to my state of mind or dose of active carbon which is increased intentionally by Tokyo water authority (whichever is fine with me).

There is no reason to expose my kid to increased radios, so we do what we can do to avoid it “reasonably”. Evacuation is not reasonable now. In Tokyo, even our attitude is bit cautious. About Fukushima, I am a bit worried about infants and pragnant women. The trouble comes from the safety standards of 1mSV/year. Some say it is too tight, some say the otherwise, and we do not know what is right. Probably there is no such right thing about radios. It is up to each one’s decision (wow, decision!!!).

Personally I think smoking is worse and asbestos is definitely worse (it is scientifically proven bad guys).

Very few of us know much about radiation other than if it doesn’t cause a quick death then it often causes cancer thereby often leading to death. While that is true to an extent it is a quite limited understanding. Here is a little explanation that may shed some light on the subject. It appears to support Wolfgang Weiss.

TG: Thanks. And as Weiss notes, the cancer from Chernobyl was mostly thyroid cancer in children, and almost all of it was cured.

From CTBTO’s web page – they are reporting that Fukushima radios are delivered to the entire northern hemisphere. I do not know if I should appreciate it.

    “Unparalleled sensitivity
it can detect a concentration of 0.1 g of radioactive Xenon evenly distributed within the entire atmosphere of the Earth.

A rooftop detector at the CTBTO’s headquarters in Vienna still catches traces of emissions from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.”

    Probably not.
