I’ve read elsewhere that multiple countries plan on having their teams acclimatize to the weather (heat and humidity) and time zone in Japan rather than China due to the pollution. I think track and field types were looking at Osaka after this past summer’s international meet there.

I’ve also heard what Tomojiro mentions. The US swimming team (if I remember this properly) was one group considering staying in Seoul. Not sure whether breathing somewhat cleaner air would get cancelled out by the tiring travel they’d have to do to get to and from the venues, though.

I imagine there will be a lot of athletes arriving early in Hong Kong or Shanghai to do their time-zone acclimatization, rather than heading straight for Beijing.

As far I know, I had read that actually several teams are considering to stay in Korea.

But Korean Won is also not that cheap if you compare it with Yen these days…

With the euro-yen rate the way it is, it’s probably a cheap option. And I can understand how they might want their team to overcome jetlag etc in a country where you can drink the tap water….

But what’s Korea’s reaction – even closer, surely? And why not Hong Kong?
