In other words, the Asahi poll finds that nearly a majority of voters want to see the opposition win a majority in the election, but also reveals that more respondents intend to vote for the ruling party in both phases of the election itself.

I found this puzzling as well. Perhaps the respondents didn't know the difference, or they just rattle off answers without thinking. I didn't see news agencies pointing out the contradiction, so I'm glad that you have.

I agree about Ozawa being a liability. On the other hand, I'm not sure that this will all be forgotten so quickly. There is bound to be damage to the Abe administration that will effect the election results. How much so will, of course, remain impossible to accurately quantify, especially if the Asahi handles the polls.

LDP or DP, either way, Japan will take the protectionist stance-either in opening up the market or human resources (I mean immigration)-'cause I hear nothing about lowering tariffs/barriers (nothing substantial, at least) or letting any kind of immigrants in- am I wrong?

It is about the economy when it comes to politics, but only as far as what voters know about economics and the economy, and what voters know is basically nothing.
