Sir Hugh is known for blatant words while he was here back in the day,but many in the diplomatic circle actually like him,for he did spend quite a lot of times as Japan hands going back from the days of WW2.Did also wrote good book on old maps of Japan and he does stand up for Japan when shistorm hits UK regarding bilateral relation such like UK tabloids insulting imperial family or war veterans attack J-UK relations. He also helps imperial family member studying in UK.Although I've found funny he brought up "anglo-saxon"term for he is a son of an Italian immigrant.

In order to be a good critic of humor, one has to have it. Hugh's writings aren't exactly fine specimens of dry British humor.

And he's "still" writing for the JT? Great way to spend time after your diplomatic posting bud.
